What evidence do we have for disruptive transfers of power in Ancient Egypt and how did the court and elites handle them? What can we learn from the Egyptians during our own turbulent political times?
Egyptian crowns almost certainly didn’t follow the king into death. Instead, they were talismanic representations of the kingship on earth. The crowns were old—divinities in their own right—I think made out of taxidermied animal parts from the bull or lion (listen to the podcast on the was scepter for more on that topic!). They had to be constructed, enlivened, and they outlasted the bodily king. No king could take such a precious thing with them into the grave.
Need more evidence! But crown making almost certainly happened in a temple when the old crown was decommissioned or repaired and a new one constructed. Since we’ve never found a crown “burial,” maybe they repaired them forever??
Do you have a link for "new study came out of england where they did uh genetic testing on a bunch of elite burials and it's all they're all maternally related?"
In the podcast Jordan mentioned she had recently read this new study on genetic testing and matrilineal connections. No worries, it interested me but I have not been able to turn it up searching.
I loved the conversation and information. Thanks !
As always so informative!
Thank you again to everyone who is involved in producing this series of podcasts. This is my favorite podcast on the entire internet.
Oh my you’re welcome!! We are chuffed to be someone’s favorite!!
Always enjoyable and informative.
I have a question on another topic.
Why has there never been a red or /and white grown found in any tomb? They took everything else with them including other head dresses.

Any theories on how and when a new one was made? Thanks for the info
